Multilingual Learners and Cultural Diversity

At Delamere, we are lucky enough to celebrate a rich cultural diversity. We have families, children and staff who speak in excess of 15 languages and we recognise the importance of celebrating this in as many ways as possible!

We adopt a multi-sensory approach to exploring all of our cultures and backgrounds including listening to songs in home languages, exploring traditional clothing, items, foods and much more!

We visit local places of worship and have built great links with some of our multi-lingual parents. Our ‘Mums Supporting Mums’ group started out as a social group teaching basic English, and has since developed into a network of mums who are confident to engage with school and who have been able to support the learning of our children by delivering show and tell sessions all about their home countries.
Each year, we celebrate Cultural Diversity Day. Children are invited to come dressed in traditional clothing or in the colours of their countries’ flags and enjoy activities that celebrate the cultures in each class. Our aim is to make every child feel confident and happy to share their cultural background and children enjoy exploring and sharing this with their peers.
As well as a whole school approach, we also offer 1:1 and small group intervention sessions for children from multi-lingual backgrounds. During these sessions, information gathered from home is used to make bespoke resources such as photo books and voice recordings in  home languages.
Every child has the right to learn and use the language, customs and religion of their family, whether or not these are shared by the majority of the people in the country where they live -Article 31 The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). At Delamere, we continually explore exciting ways in which all of our children can have this right met.
